BOB NANNA - mp3
In 1997 during an extended break in between Braid tours, the band's vocalist / guitarist Robert Nanna began playing shows and recording under the title of The City On Film, but never taking it too seriously. Throughout Braid calling it a day and both the formation and demise of Hey Mercedes to follow, Robert juggled the project with a slew of smaller releases and tours with the likes of Kind of Like Spitting and other friends. In more recent years, The City On Film has been shifted up another gear with an ongoing list of releases, touring with Minus The Bear, Owen and more across the United States, UK, Europe, South-East Asia and Australia. He has since ditched The City On Film moniker in favor of his actual name.
INTO IT. OVER IT. - mp3
On Thursday, September 27th 2007, Evan Thomas Weiss turned 23. He noticed that his last few years had gone by rather quickly. to combat (or encourage…?) this movement in his life, he has been writing and recording one song every week of his 23rd year…roughly 52 songs. He spent many years writing, recording and touring in bands. THE PROGRESS, DAMIERA and UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT B A START are a couple (among many others).

MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT (ex Rune / Dead Blue Sky) - mp3
It's definitely a triumph when a band can keep the attention of someone who possesses a near-ADHD attention span (like myself) with songs that haughtily surpass and defecate on the ten-minute mark. Their sound is as equally warm and inviting as it is ballistic and unrelenting and they make the most with the space and time they give themselves to build, layer, pillage, kill and destroy before starting the process all over again. Fuck Ritalin when you've got Mouth of the Architect. - Decibel Magazine
MILLIONS - mp3
The sound of Millions is that of vicious mood swings.
On Gather Scatter, Millions' debut full length, songs brood and boil, then erupt into manic fits, sometimes soaring toward light, sometimes crashing and burning. Millions guitarists Scott Flaster and Corey Lyons are quarreling musical twins with dueling guitars creating a codependent relationship of angst and grandeur - the neurotic impatience of BLACK FLAG scraping up against the anthemic melodies of KING CRIMSON. The pounding rhythm section of bassist Mark Konwinski and drummer Patrick O'Shea drives straight and steady through the storms.
RAISE THE RED LANTERN - mp3
Between all the bullshit of punk rock, hardcore, and everything in between todays standards of what's what in music, the only thing left breathing is rock and roll. RAISE THE RED LANTERN is fucking rock and roll. Thick breakdowns, heavy dynamics, and no complaints. Music to make you bleed and left for dead. that's about it......

THE CLERGYMEN - mp3
It has been said that musicians are the clergy of the modern world, that would make these boys Clergymen, (that, and their name being "the Clergymen"). They write all their own songs, some funny others not, they can do BOTH kinds.
I LUV LUV BIRDS - mp3
"I Luv Luv Birds is Marc Mazga's newest project with his girl, Holly Prindle. He plays stuff and she sings. It's indescribably great music. Although it's rooted in dub reggae a la The Mad Professor, there are elements of various modes of electronic music, including Cabaret Voltaire's early industrial, new styles 8-bit and glitch, and some sound collage aesthetics to keep it interesting. This is one bass-heavy, pulsing, psychedelic collection of music. Ever read William Gibson's Neuromancer? This is the music that I imagine the Rasta space colony listened to." To put it simply: Huckleberry Finn Meets Augustus Pablo in a Hummer limo. That should do it...
BOURGEOIS REBELLION - mp3
Bourgeois Rebellion is a meeting of the musical minds. Minds that were scrapped up from the collapse of multiple bands. After the demise of Red Velveteer, after the fall of The Meth Bombs, after the loss of With Lights and Sirens, Bourgeois Rebellion rose from the ashes. All band members, hailing from Chicago, met and were amazed at the musical synergy that they had just born. They established themselves as an original act and are now dedicated to pursue their combined musical aspirations. They write and play their silly little ditties to reignite what is lost in music; What truly matters in songwriting; there is such a lackluster music scene in Chicago right now, and the Rebellion is here to radiate that which is dim. So keep an ear and an eye out for these young chaps because they're here to stay.

JARED BARTMAN - mp3
There is an old photograph of Jared Bartman, age two, standing in short pants, a blazer, and bowtie, wildly strumming a child-sized plastic guitar. There is one of Jared’s earliest memories; riding to the barber shop in his father’s blue Mercury Sable, listening to the Beatles’ Please Please Me on cassette tape. There were the requests to play the song “Love Me Do” over and over again, just to hear John Lennon’s harmonica solo. There was an out-of-tune spinet piano in the basement, and that first acoustic guitar that had to be reconfigured for Jared’s left-handedness. There was a 1963 Slingerland drum kit, and there was “Beer Barrel Polka” on the old accordion. There was the copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the Fisher-Price turntable, and the stack of scratched LP’s in their yellowed sleeves, found in the attic of Jared’s grandparents. There was Princeton and shows and high school. There was college, and there was a multi-instrumentalist composer named Erik Christian Juhl, a percussionist named Aaron Kavelman, and a record producer named Mark Rubel. There is a collection of Jared’s songs intended to be listened to in one sitting, in one specific order. There was the spring of 2009, when these four individuals came together to collaborate on that collection of songs, which have now taken shape as a record called Jersey Shore.

SHE LIKES TODD - mp3
This PBR fueled 4 piece from Chicago is an intense combination of thrashing guitars and melodic vocals set over intricate drums and bass work. Taking inspiration from bands such as NOFX, Propagandhi, Frenzal Rohmb and A Wilhelm Scream, SLT writes punk rooted music about real life, friends and fallouts, the way the world works and how they’ve seen it so far. With undying determination, She Likes Todd continues play all over the US and spread their music to whoever they can, however they can.
NO CONSULTATION - mp3
Featuring ex members of Rule 22, Superfly TNT, and one current member of Private Joker, No Consulation is a Punk trio from Chicago re-energizing the pop/punk sound made famous by Screeching Weasel, The Lawrence Arms, NOFX, Alkaline Trio, and 88 Fingers Louie. Remorseful thought-felt lyrics touching on everyday life learning lessons of love, heartache, friendship and fueds, with an almost sinister undertone, are accompied by catchy hooks, sing-a-long lyrics and signature lightning fast tempos. The hardwork and dedication they've learned from their past bands have carried over to this one, making this the most ambitious project to the indviduals from No Consulation to date. Playing together since late 2008 has made Josh Quinney (drums and vocals) Dave Klod (guitar and vocals) and Will Jefferson (bass and back up vocals) determined to hit the ground running in 2009 and are quickly making themselves a forced to be reckoned with in the Chicago punk scene.
CHAPPO
Far Away, deep into the present, there was a large explosion. It was bigger than any bomb the world had ever seen. It shook our entire universe, bent time and changed our perception of everything. CHAPPO emerged. They set out with a quest for galactic equanimity and came face to face with a silver synth unicorn, a pair of metallic arms and a few doppelgangers. CHAPPO is a cross pollination of indie pop and space rock. It's The Rolling Stones in space and untamed like The Flaming Lips without gravity. They've got space shoes, phantasmagorical adventures, confetti six-shooters and diamond powder-filled hourglasses.

MEAN OHIO - mp3
Imagine finely tuning a stack of pots and pans, hammering them to perfection, then sending them tumbling down a flight of uncarpeted basement steps to the feet of a dozen or so sweaty, pimply eighth graders making out to their parents’ ‘70’s LPs. That sound, well, that’s Mean Ohio. In the inevitably subjective land of band descriptions, Mean Ohio’s music falls somewhere between low-fi dissonance and harmonic melody. In 2006, Jon Neiser formed Mean Ohio after the disbandment of My Secret Service, a group he’d started with fellow songwriter Jonny Drexler. The two had been working on and off in bands since 1994; and both had moved to Chicago from Dayton, Ohio in the late '90's. Mean Ohio performed for a short time before the line up was restructured. A little over a year later, Neiser and Drexler joined forces again under the MO moniker and were joined by Drexler’s pal, bassist Chris Posdal. With the line-up cemented, the trio completed work on their first album, Famous Basements, in Spring 2009. Currently Mean Ohio is performing in Chicago while working on their second album.

THE FORECAST
Fri. Feb. 19 - 5:00 pm - All ages -
A special all ages record release show for The Forecast!
THE FORECAST - mp3
Hailing from the once quiet town of Peoria, Illinois, The Forecast exploded onto the indie rock circuit in 2001. With their must-see live performances alongside bands like Planes Mistaken For Stars, Hey Mercedes, The Jealous Sound, Motion City Soundtrack and The Velvet Teen, they earned a rabid following in not only Peoria, but also the Midwest in general. Taking cues from indie staples such as Rainer Maria, Braid, and The Anniversary, The Forecast give the genre a well-deserved kick in the ass, ratcheting up the intensity and throwing down balls to the wall, in-your-face rock and roll. Dual vocals from guitarist Dustin Addis and bassist Shannon Burns are sometimes sweet - but do not be lulled - they can transition into gang vocals at the drop of a hat, only to turn around and lay down a meandering guitar solo reminiscent of bands like My Morning Jacket.
THE GRADUATE - mp3
THE GRADUATE have gone from virtual unknowns to gracing the cover of CMJ magazine in a matter of just a few short months. After several years of heavy touring with previous bands, these Springfield, IL natives have created quite a buzz and amassed a following that feels more like a family than a fan base. Formed in November 2005, THE GRADUATE, collaboration between long-time friends Tim Moore, Corey Warning, Matt Kennedy, Max Sauer and Jared Wuestenberg, gained momentum in the Midwest ‘indie-circuit’ due to the memorable songs, interactive live show and friendly disposition of its members.

BRICKFIGHT
Sat. Feb. 20 - 5:00 pm - All ages -
Hey! Remember all ages punk shows in Chicago? We do. Here's a reminder.
BRICKFIGHT - mp3
This band consists of four grown-ass men that still think playing guitars and drums and singing and dancing in front of other people is "acceptable." The band started in a bar called The Black Dog Tavern in Fort Worth Texas and it will probably end in the same bar. The conversation of joining forces to make music occurred over a drink special known as the Claude Simpson and will probably end over said drink special.
LIARBIRDS - mp3
After a disaster of astrological proportions left local rock band, Bob Gun, crippled and broken, a team of skilled engineers and medical personel slaved for months to piece the broken band back together. But something was missing. Borrowing a few limbs from Milwaukee's thrash punk boy wonders, the Accidents, the team was able to restore full functionality to all appendages. Thus, Liarbirds were born.
RED PHONE DISPATCH - mp3

THE DAMN CHOIR - mp3
The Damn Choir began one dark and stormy night in January of 2008 in Roscoe Village (Chicago). Gordon Robertson was out drowning his post-horrific-break-up broken heart in whiskey and happened to meet Katy Myers at an after hours bar that shall remain un-named. Robertson asked Myers to join his band about three seconds after learning she was a cellist. She politely refused. After plenty of drinks and plenty of promises, Myers eventually reconsidered and agreed to play for a couple hours just to see what would happen. Cut to three weeks later and the two were inseparable musically and involved in an unhealthy, co-dependant friendship. After playing for months under the name, “Gordon and Katy,” the two recorded an album, re-named the band, and recruited Chelsea Heck on vocals and Miguel White on drums. The four piece creates an urgent, beautiful, sound that rises and falls in harmony with the spirit of Robertson’s super-fucking-angsty lyrics.
GABRIEL KELLEY - mp3
Raised in the foothills of the Appalachians, Gabriel Kelley grew up in a rustic space out of time, steeped in the music of his forefathers. In his world, contra dances, pickin' parties and neighborly bluegrass were no anachronism. As a child, Kelley picked up the guitar and quickly became versed in the various styles of old-time players and songwriters surrounding his youth. So when he began writing and creating his own sounds, Americana/Roots Music wasn't a chosen genre or format. It was, simply, music.

STARINA - mp3
Most of Starina's life has been surrounded by music, she wrote her first song at the tender age of 9, while completing an assignment for her girl scout camp group. It was performed on a faux-wooden plastic recorder. She considers herself more of an artist than a girl scout. Hating her life and the town she lived in, she escaped to Art School where she learned the art of exposing one's soul on stage and Camel cigarettes. Though, having long given up the Camel, she still enjoys exposing herself on stage.

BOOTS WITH SPURS - mp3
Boots With Spurs do not need to rely on bizarre storytelling and imaginative plot devices to sell their music. You give this one listen, and you start to feel like a pathetic fly caught between the jaws of a Venus Fly Trap, caught helplessly in a rapid current of influences and guitar solos. The sound is like a drunken barfight between The Mars Volta, These Arms Are Snakes and Hella, all thrown into some kind of turbo blender that just will not stop for anything.
THE HIDDEN DANGERS - mp3
the hidden dangers - n. 1. A band from Chicago that plays rock-n-roll and punk rock music. 2. A way to have a good time at a rock show. 3. Something you cannot see that will probably do harm in the near future.

THE CHURCH OF ABJECT SORROW - mp3
In February, 2009, the Reverend Eepie Acob found his way to Milwaukee, WI with nothing more than a guitar and the clothes on his back. He had been forcibly removed from his home church in Northern Wisconsin due to what can only be described as "indiscretions." Having always been a hard-drinking man, the Reverend passed out in an alleyway a mere hours after his arrival in the city. Two passersby and fellow drunks happened upon his body... face down in a pool of his own blood and piss. The drunks took him in and upon waking, the Reverend played them his life's story on his guitar. The Reverend said he wanted to start up a church in Milwaukee to pick up where he had left off and to again spread his gospel. Without a dime to his name, the prospect seemed impossible, but the drunks suggested they start a roving church. The three of them would travel the countryside to promote their word and their religion. Thus, The Church of Abject Sorrow was born.
THE EARTH IS A MAN - mp3
The Earth is a Man emerged from a thick primordial soup of brotherhood and evolved into the ear-drum-fellating quartet you see today through many basement practices, Thai food dinners and desert peyote trips. The Earth is a Man moonlights as a Mormon Boys Choir. Each member of The Earth is a Man lost the tips of two fingers on his right hand in his own horrific steel-mill accident. If an angry street thug held The Earth is a Man at gunpoint and only demanded to know their musical influences, they would say, "Um... Battles, Tortoise, Don Caballero, Maps and Atlases, etc., p-please sir, don't hurt us, we're still young and have never known a woman's touch." Approximately 25% of this information is factual.

COUGARS (Hot Stove Jimmy/ Big'n, members of Haymarket Riot) - mp3
People only say "rock 'n' roll is dead" to sell records. That way a label, PR hack or jaded journalist can proclaim some band "rock's salvation." It's a load of shit. Even in these harrowing times dominated by nu metal, vapid teen pop and cookie-cutter pop-punk, we must continue to believe in the power of rock.Cougars believe. They know that rock never went anywhere, even though culturally obtuse writers and bottom-line-watching label presidents have decided it's back. Each Cougars show is a testament to its vitality. Six guys (including former members of Big'n and Hot Stove Jimmy) thrust onto the stage for a multi-instrumental assault: dueling guitars, driving bass, manic drumming, ominous keyboards, beguiling vocals. Like a hurricane spinning into motion and laying waste to all that has not been boarded up and abandoned, Cougars are collecting wolf tickets.
CINCO DE GATOS - mp3
Cinco de Gatos was a post hardcore band from Chicago, Illinois that existed from 1994 to 1996. They contributed songs to the Ground Rule Double comp, the Ooh Do I Love You comp and the Emo Scheemo 7 comp. They recorded an album called Epiphany Wants To Come Home at Steve Albini's house with Tar's bass player Tom Zaluckyj for the Action Boy label but was never released. They often shared the stage with bands such as Cap'n Jazz, Braid, Karate, The Make Up, Monitor Radio, The Scissor Girls and Kerosene 454 among others. Cinco de Gatos reformed in late 2009 to play live and record new material with a new drummer, Jon Flood.

SAVOIR ADORE - mp3
"The band obviously takes pride in their chord progressions. I was enthralled by the way the bass line rises in the chorus, scale-wise until it skips right over the expected resolution, anchoring a dissonant chord which settles back down just in time to support the shouted vocal lines. At times, the song reminds me of why I love early Radiohead." -July 17th, 2009 in Recordings, Northside Fest

IMPERIAL CHINA - mp3
"Imperial China, a trio from DC, carry on the city's long and proud legacy of slashing, experimental post-punk that's equally brainy and ballsy. They create fierce grooves, turn on a dime, throw some weird electronic flourishes in for good measure, and shimmy about on stage like they took dancing lessons from Guy Picciotto." - Philadelphia Weekly, January 7, 2009.

THE PART V - mp3
If Joy Division beat down Echo and the Bunnymen, its wake would sound a lot like Chicago based The Part V; an energizing blend of post punk and pop nods. The Part V blazes through a catchy and devilishly smart catalogue of life’s little nuances told through boozed vision. Call it what you will, but just as long as it’s not minimal.
The Part Five streak through 1982 New Order and Broken Social Scene alike, passing out angled glances at the minimalist trot of Can and Trans Am, but sticking close to the melodic nature of early Pretenders. Break out your friendly stomp.
I LOVE YOU - mp3
I Love You is Kansas City, Missouri’s best-kept secret. From Kansas City, that is. In just two years of existence, the band that Chicago’s WZRD calls “the natural progression in music” has played over a hundred shows, well over half of which have been on the road.

DAYS OFF (member of Fourth Rotor) - mp3
What more could you really ask for? As punkrock evolved from single cells in the seventies, the evolutionary tree branched out in many directions. Near the base of one of these phylogenic families were the Minutemen, the Replacements, and other less well known species. Long has science thought that this branch was very, very extinct. In the fall of 2005, Days Off was discovered in Chicago; stunning the world. Perhaps as ancient as the Loch Ness Monster, or perhaps a bizarre chimera formed in a lab, with Springsteen DNA substituted for where there were gaps...only one thing is certain: Days Off is jamming in the scene.
BIRD SOUNDS
Music critics refer to post-punk implying that "punk" is a twelve step program that can be discarded upon maturation and sobriety. Bird Sounds play post-punk implying that "punk" is something so much more than a musical stepping stone.
LOVE AND SQUALOR - mp3
Imagine if Douglas Quaid from Total Recall met the crew of Serenity after the terraformation of Mars , who all traveled back in time to fight Robo-Khrushchev for control of the Power Cosmic. That would be really cool. Love and Squalor is a punk band from Chicago

ROOFTOP VIGILANTES - mp3
"Kind of a combination of Irish Punk and Screamo that has some deep running indie pop hiding in its veins. Some of the songs on their Myspace are a little too hardcore for me personally, but the more upbeat tracks like “Oscar Want 7″ and “Charley No Want Girlfriend” really show the bands ability to take a more widely appealing sound and shove it down your throat with their all out, full blown style. This is definitely a band to keep up with as they develop." (littleboxofindie.com)

THE SCREENS - mp3
Mixing vintage garage rock with punkish roots and elements of psychedelica into a heady brew of their own creation, the Screens are perhaps the best unsigned band in America right now. This is the kind of no-frills rock & roll that Bomp! Records founder Greg Shaw practically invented (or at least nurtured), the Screens delivering a potent musical elixir to chase away those corporate-rock blues. - mondogordo.com - Alt Culture Guide

RED PONY CLOCK - mp3
We're a psychadelic indie-pop band from San Diego, CA. Usually there's a lot of junk going on in the songs due to there usually being a lot of people playing the songs. Some of the people can play/sing really well. Some can't seem to do anything very well. But they're all very nice people, regardless. Some songs are sad. Some are happy. But we try our best to make them all nice. We love making music!
BIRDS AND BATTERIES - mp3
Birds&Batteries started in Boston. They migrated to Wellfleet, Cape Cod where the 18 songs known as "Nature vs. Nature" were recorded. One particularly fuzzy bird flew all the way to San Francisco, and reformed Birds&Batteries. They now reside in SF and Oakland, and play shows for people.

CHEAP GIRLS - mp3
Hi, we're Cheap Girls. We're a rock band from Lansing, Michigan.
THE RIOT BEFORE - mp3
The Riot Before is not flashy, it is not fashion, it is not forced, it is not fake. It is simple chords, simply played, with the purpose of giving a home to lyrics written with purity, precision, and passion. It is, at the foundation of everything, sincere -- intensely sincere. These songs exist because they must. Not because there was a demand for them -- there was little -- but because they were too restless to remain locked in the bedroom they were created in. Because they can only find consummation out in the open, in the ears of others. Because they came about as a result of inspiration from art, emotion, and life, and because the writer of these songs cannot be content until he has given away some of that inspiration; which is sacred and, unfortunately, so elusive in our current world. The purpose of these songs is, at the very least, to entertain, and at the very best, to inspire. Thank you for listening.
THE GUNSHY - mp3

Brothers Anton and Lewis Patzner started off playing metal violin and cello duets on the streets in Berkeley, California in 2002. Soon the brothers recruited their friend Jon Bush to play drums and began playing fully amplified shows in Santa Cruz and Oakland with bands like The Botticellis, Minkus, Desa and The Matches. With a refined melding of acoustic and electric instrumentation Judgement Day continues to challenge and impress listeners.

A song cycle and a band, led by violin-looper and singer Alicia Jo Rabins, with Aaron Hartman of Old Time Relijun on upright bass. BITCH (of Bitch and Animal) - mp3
My name is B*tch—my mom named me that---I was a 10.5-pound Aries, what can I say? I am happy to say that my new record, "Blasted!" is finished and ready to be released into the world next spring on my own little awesome record label, Short Story Records. Some of you may not recognize me without my dreadlocks—it's me! The same sm-arty electric violin lady with a whole new album that is the best thing i've made yet. And i produced it myself! It's co-produced by my friend and band-mate, Gabriel K, and long-time collaborator, Wayne Schrengohst. Liz Kelly also did some production work and played her hands off on it! Lee Free came in and shook things up on the drums. Steve Fisk mixed it and the world is about to be changed!
THE STATE OF - mp3
the State Of is the product of the marriage between Steph Taylor’s edgy piano/synth playing and Nabedi Osorio’s electronic-like live drumming. Their dark pop sensibility is born out of their hometown of Miami, FL and is reminiscent of artists ranging from the Eurythmics and Bjork to Radiohead and the Police. Taylor’s style of playing is often percussive and dark where Osorio’s drumming is melodic and steadfast and when coupled, they create a dynamic sound larger than what’s expected out of two people.

MELISMATICS - mp3
The Melismatics are a power pop band that doesn't try to pass itself off as "punk". They write ridiculously catchy pop music driven by twin guitar riffing and impressive vocals. Like Queens of the Stone Age, this foursome offers a contemporary take on classic rock, though the Melismatics are much more direct and upbeat.
DEATH SHIPS - mp3
Setting sail from the landlocked environs of Iowa City, Iowa, Death Ships are not what you..d expect. Rather than a band full of heshers, overrun with long flowing locks, cranking out screeching metal from Marshall full stacks, the bands sound eschews this notion by mixing up elements of rock, folk, pop, and alt country. The band is now prepping for smooth sailing alongside former Wilco member Jay Bennett.

Think progression and cyclical pattern within phrase. Think destruction and forward-moving momentum. And forget everything you thought you knew about this band. Tartufi is new music for the new breed of musical thinkers. Fuck pop. Tartufi is wave and wavelength. Power and tenacity. Fear and retribution. Tartufi is explosive, furious, and beautiful.

FLORAL TERRACE - mp3
“Who the $&% is Floral Terrace?!” is a question the band learned to embrace last autumn after bursting onto the radar in mid 2008. As a young band in New York's highly competitive Hudson Valley music scene, the group is based around one singular concept - writing catchy guitar driven music that they themselves and others will enjoy. But what makes one band stand out in such an over-saturated market? Eighteen year old front Man Justin Olori admits “it hasn’t been easy getting noticed. You just have to love and believe in your music and hope people can see, feel, and hear it in your work.” After years of knowing each other and countless local bands between the 3 of them, Justin and childhood friend George Bosotina partnered up with drummer John Damiano to begin putting the puzzle pieces together. Local music buff Brian Millagram quickly grew into the roll of rhythm guitarist and brought the new dynamic of tasteful backing vocals to the table. Olori chose to put down the bass in early 2009 to focus solely on singing. Approaching their one year anniversary, Floral Terrace remains optimistic about their future and continues to work on what will be their studio album debut . “A lot of bands get really worked up about the music industry” says George Bosotina. “We just want to write an album we believe in and take it to the world. Whether by ourselves, or with the support of a record label, we are coming!”
